Entry 4: Reflection

In this class I have learned a lot about second language and how it effects people not knowing another language. When I first started working at the rec center I had some parents that just would not learn English and I never understood why they did not want to learn it. I never understood the process that it takes and how hard it maybe. Especially if you have been raised your whole life not knowing it and did not learn it as a child. I never knew the facts behind learning a second language and that learning has so many different factors that have to do with learning a new language, like, the motivation and the age of someone.  I have learned so much in this class on how I will take certain things and incorporate them into my classroom so that anyone that is a second language leaner can be successful in my classroom. I have seen many different factors and how teachers use motivation in their classroom to help their students and I would have never thought about the certain thing...

Entry 3

Entry 3 Interview with Bilingual Teacher. Click here to watch the video. For this interview I decided to do Ms. Revollar which is one of our bilingual teachers on our second grade team. She went to school in Venezuela and graduated with her EC-6 degree. She was super nervous because she did not want to say something wrong. Her accent is very strong and so she said she did not want to make any grammar mistakes. Glass and Selinker talk about "how native speakers of a language know when certain sounds are possible in a word and when they would not be used"(p.9). She said that she doesn't know certain words in English and only knows them in Spanish so she was nervous to say something if she couldn't think of the English word so we practiced before we recorded so she could feel comfortable with her answers. Ms. Revollar showed us some of her strategies for motivating her students and how she uses materials in English and transfers them to Spanish herself. A lot of Ms. ...

Entry 2 Interview

Entry 2. For entry 2 I interviewed one of our classmates, Damaris. Click here to watch the video! Entry 2 reflection: First it was great getting to know more about Damaris background and how ever though English was not her first language but she feels the most comfortable speaking English. Ortega states that the learner who began acquiring their L2 at such a young age tend to exhibit intuitions that are very similar of that language (Ortega, 2013, p.19). That is a reason why Damaris feels so comfortable speaking English to this day. In school it was hard for Damaris to do her work without the help of her siblings and with it seeming like the teachers just pushed her aside and just let the other students help her. Damaris did state that reading was hard for her because not only was she just learning to read but she was trying to read in a different language. Damaris had stated that one of her classmates would help her because that student knew both Spanish and English. According ...

Taylor Simpson's Blog Entry One: Self Introduction  About me: Hello my name is Taylor Simpson and I am a senior at University of Houston. Check out my all about me video to get to know a little more about me! CLICK HERE to watch the video :) As you can see English is my first language and I am not fluent in any other language, even though I try to speak Spanish I still need some practice. If I would have never worked at the summer camp and experienced it myself, I would have never realized that a lot of kids do not  know English if that was not t heir first language. According to Ortega "In some parts of the world most children grow up speaking one language only" ( Ortega, 2013). I quickly learned that when I was trying to talk to Sebastian and all he did was stare at me with a puzzled look on his face. While working in the summer camp I never got frustrated at the boys from Venezuela that they could not understand me, I just could not image ho...
